Committed to Markets at Davies Park

05 December, 2006

Councillor Helen Abrahams has given a commitment to work to continue to keep the Green Flea Market in Davies Park, West End.

“In the past, I have worked with Peter Hackworth and her daughter Gian to keep the markets in Davies Park,” Cr Abrahams said.

“We have made improvements, which include improved electrical supply, car parking and relocating the large trucks.

“Now a tree fungus is threatening the markets.”

One fig tree in the avenue of majestic shady trees is infected with the fatal Phellinus Noxius fungus.

This fungus affects the root sap of trees and kills trees in a process similar to ringbarking the tree.

“These trees are probably more than 100 years old and they need to be protected,” Cr Helen Abrahams said.

“I am advised that the trucks, vans, stalls and even the hundreds of people walking under the trees causes the trees stress.

“A stressed tree is more vulnerable to the fungus.

“At the same time, I believe the markets must remain in Davies Park,” she said.

“Last week, Civic Cabinet was presented with alternative sites for the Market.  None offered that same amenity as under the fig trees by the river in Davies Park, and so were rejected by Civic Cabinet.

“The quarantine of the infected tree from neighbouring trees means a loss of space for the market.  Peter Hackworth - the market operator - is concerned that there will be fewer stalls in the market and this might adversely affect the profitability of the market.

“I shall work with Peter Hackworth to keep the markets operating.  This market is one of the most successful in Brisbane, as evident from the growth in recent times and the number of people who come every Saturday to buy vegetables, flowers and other goods,” Cr Abrahams said.
