Shop front parking disappears

08 October, 2009

Council has removed parking from in front of 8 shops in Gladstone Road, Highgate Hill, without consulting the traders.

Corinne Sparks, Handmade Naturals at 7 Gladstone Road can not believe that this has happened without her or the other shop keepers being told.

“The Council project team arrived on 21 May 2009 without warning.”

“I was told that a new footpath with trees and shrubs was to be constructed  at the intersection of Gladstone Road and Vulture Street” said Corinne.

“At no time, was I told that the traders were going to lose our parking. How can a strip shopping centre survive without parking for customers? ” said Corinne.

“It has been a nightmare since May. No one has been able to park due to the barriers and road works”

“The only help I have had from Council was a sign saying “Shop Open”. Council’s communication officer who delivered the sign did not tell me that the loss of parking was permanent.”

Cr Abrahams is concerned that the traders only now have become aware of the impact on their businesses.

“Corinne Sparks contacted me because she was expecting a concrete aggregate footpath rather than asphalt. You can imagine Corinne’s horror when she learnt as a result of my representation that the shop front parking was gone for good.” said Cr Abrahams

“I have asked Council’s traffic engineers to restore at least some kerb side parking for these small businesses” said Cr Abrahams
