Angus Weicinski is an angry mother who has found the Lord Mayor’s commitment to install flashing yellow lights at traffic lights in Logan Road has evaporated into thin air putting her children’s lives in danger.
Grace Weicinski narrowly missed being hit by a car running the red light when she crossed with her Mother and brother Robert last week. It was only the quick action on the part of her mother than saved her from being hit by a white van.
On 24 April 2008, the Lord Mayor wrote to the President of Buranda State School advising:
“Recognising the poor visibility of the signals, I have asked for advance flashing yellow signals to be investigated and listed for design and priority consideration in the 2008/2009 financial year.”
It is now 18 months later and there is no sign of advance flashing traffic lights: not even the designs of the flashing lights.
“It is clear that the safety of children crossing at this intersection is not a priority for the Lord Mayor” said Cr Abrahams
“Parents of Buranda State School has a number of frightening stories about drivers of vehicles ignoring the lights and near misses of hitting pedestrians at the lights” said Cr Abrahams
“The major road works as part of the Eastern Busway makes the existing traffic lights even more dangerous as drivers may be distracted by all the movements and action on the side of the road.”
“I join parents of Buranda State School and call on the Lord Mayor to have the advanced flashing lights installed as a priority in the next three months” said Cr Abrahams
