No Support for West End Plan

28 September, 2009

Letter to Editor, Courier Mail

As Councillor for the West End peninsula, I have never supported the Lord Mayor’s plan for West End and South Brisbane contrary to Cr Cooper’s misleading comments (C M 28th September).

I do not support 15, 8 or 5 storey buildings on Boundary Street, West End. I think 30 storey buildings around St Mary Church is too high and 12 to 15 storeys along the River near Davies Park will create a canyon of buildings along the River.

I did support a motion to investigate higher densities subject to a process of engaging the community, respecting their wishes and delivering what they wanted into a Neighbourhood Plan for the area.

Instead, the local community has been locked out of the process. The Community Planning Team was over represented by property owners who are the major beneficiaries of the Lord Mayor’s plan. I do not support this process as it has disenfranchised the community. I voted for the community to be involved not have their wishes totally disregarded.
