Eight storey buildings the new entrance to Boundary Street, West End

The Lord Mayor’s renewal plans for West End allows for eight storey redevelopment on the site between Boundary Street and Browning Street.

‘This is the entrance to one of the most loved retail streets in Brisbane. The changes proposed will change forever the character of West End.” said Cr Helen Abrahams.

“This plan will ruin the atmosphere for people from all over Brisbane who come to West End to enjoy the diversity and the laid back atmosphere.“

The proposed plan will protect only 5 of 30 buildings in Boundary Street between Jane Street and Vulture Street from redevelopment to five storey buildings.

“This plan encourages property owners to amalgamate sites so they can maximise development.”

“This is in complete contrast with the “fine grain” of shops currently along Boundary Street. In some stretches there is a different shop every 3 to 7 metres. This is part of the exciting mix of Boundary Street” said Cr Abrahams.

“This land use should be protected not destroyed through amalgamation of sites” said Cr Abrahams

“This basic principle of the renewal plan is wrong for West End” said Helen Abrahams

The plan identifies five character commercial buildings between Jane and Vulture Street, West End.

“This means the facades of these buildings may be retained with a five storey new building behind”.

The joy of walking along Boundary Street is that the buildings create the skyline. This will go. It will not be possible to see the sky, instead a canyon effect will be created.

“I encourage everyone to let the Lord Mayor know what you think of this proposal. The closing date for submissions is Thursday 17th September 2009. Submissions should be made to SouthBrisbaneRiverside@brisbane.qld.gov.au
