“Le Pont de Pointless” was the winning suggestion from Robyn Mills, Dutton Park for the name that best reflects local sentiment to the Hale Street Toll Bridge. Robyn won a meal for two at Tukka Restaurant, West End.
Councillor Helen Abrahams joined Kerrod Trott, Editor of The Westender and Darren Godwell, President of West End Community Association to hold a ‘peoples choice’ bridge naming competition.
“The recent announcements of increased congestion and long delays during construction reinforces the appropriateness of this name” said Cr Abrahams.
The runner up also received an award. Pseudonym entrant, Buffo Marinus (cane toad) offered two suggestions.
“Campbell’s Folly” was named after a picturesque (but relatively small) outcrop in the Scenic Rim, not very far from Mount Lindesay. There are a number of features of this mountain and its cliff face which make it similar to the bridge:
- It is arched in shape, and made of a hard material.
- Scattered around the ends of the arch are 700 to 2800 (rhyolitic) dykes.
- It is possible to traverse the arch, with excellent views from the highest point.
- Travellers who wish to traverse the arch should allow up to 3 hours to travel that distance.
“Campbell’s Mum’s Bridge” recognises the number of ‘yes’ submissions from Campbell Newman’s family living in Perth. Their supporting statements included “When we visit Brisbane, we’d love to use this bridge.”
As runner up, Buffo Marinus donated his prize to “the person who made it all possible - Lord Mayor Campbell Newman” so long as he travels to and from Tukka Restaurant using the199 bus and he dines on the footpath so as best to take in the local colour.
“Cr Abrahams presented Cr Campbell Newman his prize in the Council Chamber on Tuesday 11 August. Unfortunately the Lord Mayor ran from the Council chamber rather than accept the prize.
“Other suggested names worth mentioning were “The Illwill Bridge”, “E-tollomio” and “Reckon Silly Notion Bridge”.
“Congratulations to everyone who offered suggestions” said Cr Abrahams.
