Going Solar at No Extra Cost

07 December, 2006

Homes can massively reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 25% at no extra cost, under a new proposal Environment and Sustainability Chair Helen Abrahams is calling on Brisbane City Council to investigate.

Council could provide leadership in a partnership with a utility company by removing the upfront costs of solar hot water systems for residents.

“A utility company has proposed to replace, supply and operate the solar hot water systems for the same price homeowners are paying for their existing electric system – it’s a win/win situation.  There will be no extra cost to the property owner,” Cr Abrahams said.

“Many people don’t realise that 25 to 30% of household greenhouse gas emissions are produced from the electric hot water system – it is the single most emissions-producing item in the household.

“A solar hot water system produces 80-90% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than an electric hot water system.

“Many people realise we need to take individual actions to halt Climate Change – but things such as the upfront cost of installing such a system can act as a barrier.

“This proposal effectively removes that barrier and individuals can make a real contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions at no additional cost,” she said.
