Labor Councillors have expressed concern about the Lord Mayor’s announcement in the Council Chamber today that he will be squeezing 25,000 additional people into West End, irrespective of local area planning.
Labor Leader Shayne Sutton and Councillor for The Gabba Ward Helen Abrahams said they were both shocked by the statement, which was made during Council debate this afternoon.
“The Lord Mayor’s announcement that he’ll be squeezing 25,000 more people into West End makes an absolute mockery of Council’s Neighbourhood Planning process and the West End Woolloongabba Local Plan,” Councillor Sutton said.
“When it comes to increasing density, the Lord Mayor clearly thinks he is above the law.
“Last year we saw him announce 25-30 storey height limits in the area without any consultation and now he has announced his secret plan to fit 25,000 more people in to the area,” she said.
Local Councillor Helen Abrahams said there were only 6,000 people living in West End. The Lord Mayor’s announcement will more than quadruple the population of West End.
“The Lord Mayor has made his plans for the area clear and in doing so, is riding roughshod over the wishes of the local community,” she said.
“He has no intention of listening to local residents who have not yet had their say on the appropriate level of growth for the area.
“This huge influx of people will mean skyscrapers along the Brisbane River in West End.
“There is no way I will support the destruction of character of this wonderful inner-city suburb,” Councillor Sutton said.
