Butts out of Boundary Street

02 March, 2009

I wish to thank the 22 volunteers who joined me to Clean Up Boundary Street, West End last Sunday.

Twelve bags of litter were collected as West End traders joined with members of Rotaract South Brisbane and other volunteers to pick up cigarette butts and lolly wrappers.

The cigarette butts picked up filled three large bags. It was enough to make the smokers among us resolved to think before tossing their butts.

I shall be asking Council to install five butt bins were we found the greatest number of butts.

Now is it up to the night club and restaurant owners to make sure their customers do the right thing. Council officers will be in the area in the next week issuing warnings or fines to anyone caught littering.
