I welcome the Premier’s announcement today regarding the installation of rainwater tanks for new homes.
I think this is a great idea, as the benefits of rainwater tanks for homes are well known - especially given the serious drought we are currently experiencing.
As well, home-owners will significantly reduce their water bills and their reliance on the city’s main water system.
Rainwater tanks reduce the amount of potable water that needs to be pumped – so the use of tanks help reduce Council’s use of electricity to pump water through our mains.
This results in reductions in Greenhouse Gas emissions.
Rainwater tanks are also good for the local environment. A rainwater tank connected to the roof of a house reduces stormwater run-off and the resulting erosion and flooding of local creeks. This also reduces the amount of dirty water flowing into our waterways.
I wholeheartedly congratulate Premier Beattie on this decision.
