Brisbane Seniors Online (BSOL)
Volunteer Computer Mentors and New Learners Required
BSOL is a voluntary not-for-profit organisation established to provide computer tuition and support for people over 50 in the Brisbane area. Learners normally receive one-on-one tuition based on a structured but flexible curriculum that can be tailored to suit the skills and needs of learners. Ideally training is provided on learners’ own computers in their home. In some cases, tuition is offered in structured classes, in Council libraries and in our Central training rooms in the City. Brisbane is broken up into 9 hubs. Currently desperately seeking new mentors in most of these hubs in the Brisbane area. Mentoring is a rewarding experience and also allows mentors themselves to acquire additional skills by interaction with other mentors and learners. Mentors are not required to be computer experts but some reasonable degree of computer confidence and competencies are essential. As an active mentor, free additional training is available on specialised applications and new technology. Learners receive training on computer basics, security, operating systems, word processing, email and Internet. More advanced training and workshops are available to learners and mentors. Please see the BSOL website www.bsol.asn.au or contact the BSOL office on 3210 6983. To view photos Click Here

The big smile and cheery 'Good morning' from James D is no more. Friday 22nd February was James's last day selling The Big Issue at West End ferry terminal after two years hard work.
James knew everyone by name and which ferry or bus they caught. He would sign that they had to run, hold the bus for the late passenger and welcomed the day for many commuters.
James is a West End personality. He will be missed.
James, from everyone, we wish you well in your next job.

The indigenous community and supporters meet at Jaggera Hall, Musgrave Park for a celebratory lunch to commemorate the National Apology from Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
There was not sufficient standing room so many were on the lawn or veranda. It was a moving celebration with individual murris telling their family story of children being taken from their parents.

KURILPA WHEELCHAIR DERBY AUTUMN 2008
The West End Community Association (WECA) is planning a unique event for the autumn of 2008. They’re calling it a “wheelchair derby” and it’s designed to celebrate members of the community who rely on wheelchairs (motorised or otherwise) for transport.
Taking place in the part of Brisbane traditionally know as Kurilpa (that’s West End, South Brisbane, Hill End, Dutton Park, Highgate Hill and parts of Woolloongabba) the event will be open to all Brisbane residents but will be particularly targeted at those from the local area.
The Kurilpa Wheelchair Derby will have two parts and promises something for everyone. “There will be a parade where owners can decorate their wheelchairs, make them into mini floats and then get out and look great. The other aspect to the event will be a series of races where wheelchair street muscle is sure to burn rubber and thrill both spectators and participants alike.”
